Born in Erwin, Tenn., he was the son of the late Catherine Sandidge and Robert Earl Thompson Sr., and husband of the late Joan Garland Thompson. He was employed by Coats North America for over 20 years. He was also a 32nd Scottish Rite of the Free Masonry and a member of the Shriners Lodge in Bakersville. He was affiliated with Nolichuckey Baptist Church in Jonesborough, Tenn. Survivors include two brothers, Robert Earl Thompson Jr. of Erwin, and Harold (Gene) Thompson of Jonesborough; one sister, Blanche Bolton of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Revs. Harold Grindstaff and Joey Murdock officiated. Burial followed in Roselawn Memory Gardens. The family received friends from noon until the service hour Monday at the funeral home.
