They were devout Christians and members of the Baptist Church. Also men of wealth and influence. They were members of the Convention that framed the constitution of the State of Tenn and also had the honor of being members of the first Legislature of Tenn. John was elected to the senate and Spencer to the House of Representatives. We have no record of their ages. Raleigh Clack, a son of Spencer Clack was born June 4th 1772, and was married to Mary Randels Oct. 28th 1791. His first wife having died, he was married again Aug. 15th 1816 to Martha Kerr. He was a resident of Kentucky for a time afterward moved back to East Tenn on the French Broad River, owning a large farm in the fork of French Broad and Pigeon rivers. Later he bought a large farm in the 3rd civil district of Rhea Co., Tenn. and moved to it where he spent the residue of his life. He served in the Army under Gen. Jackson in his famous campaigns against the Indians and was in that memorable battle of the Horse Shoe in 1814. He died Dec. 16 1842 and was buried in the Clack cemetery near his residence where a marble slab marks his last resting place. Micajah Clack, a son of Raleigh & Mary Clack was born in Wayne Co. Ky. May 21st 1799. Was married to Margaret Kerr Sept 28th 1820. He moved to Rhea Co in 1838 and in 1847 he bought a tract of land known as the old Colonel Preston farm and moved to it where he spent the remainder of his life. He and his wife joined the Baptist Church in 1833 where they lived devoted members until their death which occurred in Aug 16th 1886 and Sept 1877 respectively. It can be truly said they performed well their part and have left to the world the results of a useful life, a spotless record and an honored name. William Raleigh Clack, son of Micajah and Margaret Clack, was born in Rhea Co., Feb. 4, 1839. He was a confederate soldier in Col. Gillespie's regiment and was at the siege of Vicksburg in 1863. Being related to the Clacks, of which fine old family I am told you are a member, I am venturing to write to you in search of information concerning them. My mother, nee Louisa P. Gordon, who was the wife of General Felix K. Zollicoffer, C.S.G., of Tennessee, was descended from the Clacks of Virginia. I am writing for publication in book form an account of her family and there are several points in their history upon which I have not been able to get definite data. I shall appreciate your kindness if you will enlighten me as to the following doubtful points. 1st Was the earliest Clack immigrant to America Rev. James Clack of Gloucester Co., Virginia, who, as his epitaph states, came over from England to Virginia in the year 1678 or was there an earlier immigrant who came from Wales--if so what was their relationship to each other 2nd Who were the parents of Hon. John Clack (Major in Revolutionary War) and his brother Spencer Clack (also Rev soldier) who were both of ........... members of the 1st Constitutional Convention of Tennessee in 1796 from Sevier Co., Tenn. 3rd, Did one of their descendants marry a Miss Madin of Virginia? 4th Was James R. Clack of East Tenn, who married Ana Stokes of Va., a descendant of either? (end of page) NEXT PAGE 5th Was James Clack of Tenn, who is listed among the Revolutionary soldiers buried in Tennessee soil, a descendant of John or Spencer? 6th. How did the name Spencer get into the Clack family-- The Spencers of early Colonial Virginia were very important and influential people. They were intermarried with the Lewisters and Thornton and Bollings of those times--also the Bally Carters and Washingtons. 7th. Do you know the connection between the early Clacks and the Sterling of Virginia? In Miller's "Official Manual of Tenn." I find A Sterling Clack who was in the Legislature in the early part of the 19th century. The name Sterling has come down in my mother's branch of the family from the time of the grand children of Rev. James Clack of Gloucester Co., Va. to the present time, but I do not know how it was acquired. 8th. In those branches of which you have knowledge was there a tradition of being descended from Pocahuntas? 9th Do you know if Commodore John Henry Clack, U.S. Navy and his brother James Sterling Clack of Louisiana (a very fine gentleman) were closely related to John & Spencer Clack of Tenn and to the brave Colonel Calvin J. Clack USA 11th (no 10th listed--ECS) Can you tell me how to get in touch with any of the descendants of Colonel Franklin H. Clack CSA of New Orleans (Crescent Regent) who was a son of the above mentioned Commodore Henry Clack 12th I been told that a niece of James Sterling Clack married a nephew of Gen. Lee, can you tell me who both of them were? (end of page) NEXT PAGE My book is about ready for the press and I will thank you to answer as soon as you conveniently can in order that any data you may furnish can be included . I should be very glad to have your own lineage and any facts about your ancestors you would care to have inserted. Very Truly (Mrs) Octavia Zollicoffer Bond To Mr. R. A.
