Alexander arrived in Lincoln County before 1818 and purchased land on Mulberry Creek in 1825. His land adjoining land of Nathaniel and Benjamin Rudd and Jesse Ellis. Alexander's oldest son William married Cynthia Dodson 6 Jan.1818 in Davidson County. I have found information that makes me believe that Cynthia was a Dawson not Dodson. Alexander had two other sons that married while in Lincoln County. Henry A. Dacus married (circa 1822) Elizabeth (Amy)_______ born in SC and Lewis I. Dacus married (circa 1823) Nancy _________ born in Va. One of Alexander's daughters (Sarah) married (1824) Benjamin Merrell in Lincoln County. William and Sarah are the only marriages I have found recorded so far. Lewis left Lincoln County in 1818 to fight the Seminoles. This is the earliest record I have found regarding the Dacus family in Lincoln County. Alexander's land was sold at the courthouse door on Dec 29, 1827 to satisfy six judgments against him. Alexander and all of his sons moved to Tipton County, TN circa 1830. Sarah stayed in Lincoln County until circa 1838 then moved to AL and later to TX. ---- End of message ---- From: Beth Sloan Subject: Re: How to control your subscription to LCT-L Date: Sat, 08 Mar 1997 17:50:39 +0000 At 01:21 PM 3/8/97 -0500, you wrote: I am going to England next week end to do some genealogy work ( and play) and I am afraid that three weeks of mail piling up won't make my server happy. RICHARD WYATT ! from Record of Don Wyatt Fayetteville, Tn (passed to Ray C. Bonsal through Hazel Cravens) Richard Wyatt was born in Virginia, March 14 1769. He lived to be 91 years old, died in Tennessee Sept 1, 1860. After his father's death, he was apprenticed to a weaver, but because of will treatment he ray away at 14 years of age. Sometime in 1783 he, with his bother, Thomas, left Virginia and went to the Chester District of South Carolina. He left his brothers, William and John, whom he never saw again. (He lived near Chesapeake Bay, as a boy.) Sarah Jane Blair, born in October 16, 1767, came from Belfast, Ireland to South Carolina in 1779. She and her whole family; her father, James Blair, Mother, Margaret (Jenkins) Blair, two brothers, Thomas and James, Jr., came over on a sailing vessel, and landed at Charleston, South Carolina; it took 6 months to cross the ocean. they were reduced to one cup of water per person. Richard Wyatt and Sarah Jane Blair were married May 3, 1792, while living in the Chester District of South Carolina, Richard Wyatt and his wife became the parents of six children: three sons; James born November 25, 1797; Thomas born April 12, 1801; William born 16 Nov 1802; and three daughters, Margaret Blair born 1793; Elizabeth, 1795 and Sarah 1804. In 1804 Richard Wyatt, then 35 years of age, with his wife and six children left Chester District of South Carolina, crossed the Blue Ridge and the great Smokey Mountains, and made their new home in the vicinity of Nashville, Tennessee. Another daughter, Jane was born in 1807, and the fourth son John, born June 25, 1809 were added in Tennessee to complete the family. The year 1808 brought another move. The family made their home near Elk River in Lincoln County near Fayetteville, Tennessee. Here Richard and Jame Wyatt saw their eight children reach manhood and womanhood. All had children except their oldest son, James, and the youngest daughter, Jane. James was Captain of the Mounted Gunmen in the war of 1812, and died at the age of 32, he never married; Jane was the maiden Aunt to the other's children. Margaret Blair Wyatt, the first born, became the wife of John Fullerton. They were the parents of six children. Elisabeth married Rhodes West; they had ten children; Thomas married Isabella Jane Wham, and was the father of six sons and four daughters; Sarah became Mrs. Alexander Morton, Jr.; they had eight children. William born in 1802 in South Carolina, married Sarah Breckenridge, and they had six sons and three daughters. John Wyatt, their las child born in 1809 married Margaret Greer Hamilton; they were the parents of eleven children. The families of Sarah and John moved to Illinois. When her las born was forty-three years old and several grand children of mature age, Sarah Jane Blair Wyatt died in Lincoln County, near Fayetteville, Tennessee, June 3, 1852 at the age of 84 years, 8 mos. Richard Wyatt lived eight more years. He died Sept 1, 1860 at 91 years. He was not aware the his old home State of South Carolina would lead in the secession from the Union, and that in the War thus participated, two of his grandsons (own brothers) would be arrayed against each other; one fighting for the union, one fighting for the Confederacy and slavery. !WYATT FAMILY RECORD !Sarah Jane Blair born October 16, 1767 Richard Wyatt born March 14, 1769 Margaret Blair Wyatt born June 19, 1793 Elisabeth Wyatt born January 12, 1795 James Wyatt born November 25, 1797 Thomas Benjamin Wyatt born April 12, 1801 William Wyatt born November 16, 1802 Sarah Wyatt born September 2, 1804 Jane Wyatt born June 1, 1807 John Wyatt born June 25, 1809 ______________ !MARRIAGES !Richard Wyatt and Jane Blair Married May 3, 1792 Margaret Wyatt and John Fullerton married March 17, 1811 Elisabeth Wyatt and Rhodes West married December 30, 1819 Thomas B. Family Tree Maker works just fine for merging GEDCOM files...the problem is after merging the two gedcom files, I usually have a few hundred duplicate individuals. In Family Tree Maker, you must merge each of these people one at a time, and there is no command to force a merge of individuals. What you have to do is make the two people close enuff that the program knows they are the same...by changing birthdays, etc. I would like to be able to just click on two guys named William Smith and then click a merge button. He gives you a walk-through Gedmerge if you need it, and the disk is free when you buy the program. I've been using it since 1990. Let me know if you'd like the address, phone #, etc. He's very well-known and is now affiliated with the AGLL group. I subscribe to all of his newsletters, etc. The one that's my favorite, which is VERY informative is THE GENEALOGY BULLETIN. This also comes with your AGLL membership per year. Good luck. I've never used any other program except PAF, which I liked until EFT came along. EFT is very user-friendly, too, and writes in book format, has a research log, etc. I'm sure all of the other programs have it, too, I've just been very pleased with this one, and also his availability to help you with his personal program. I tried Brother's Keeper, BK, but couldn't find any other add-ons that really beat the EFT. Hope this helps. You merge the files that are all separate. You start by entering your master files, then every file after that is GEDCOM'd into your computer after that is in a different file. THAT is when GEDMERGE comes in, to put them ALL together, but you don't have duplicate files on the same people though. Hope that clears it up!! I'm impressed that that many people responded! Becky BeckysTree@aol.com ---- End of message ---- From: Rick Parker Subject: merging genealogy data Date: Sat, 29 Mar 1997 00:49:32 -0500 Well, I must say I was surprised by the number of responses to my question about merging duplicate individuals in Gedcom files. About half the people asked that I let them know what I discover, because they have had the same problems with Family Tree Maker. The following are some of the suggestions and recommendations that I have received... 1. "I believe that you are simply asking too much from your computer." Nope, what I am asking is very simply for a computer. I want to make it clear that I am not asking for the computer to decide which individuals to merge. I am also not asking for an automerge. What I want is a program that will allow me to compare information on two individuals, edit them if needed, and then force a merge. This should include all ancestors and descendents. Again, not automerge, but controlled merging that is completely under my control. I also favor backup files in case bad things happen. 2. About FTM: "On the subject of problems with an otherwise outstanding program, I also don't like the fact that you can only choose to keep one piece of source information in the merge details window. Far too often, I want to keep both!" Another good point! That is why I want to see the information on both persons on the screen at the same time, with the ability to edit the information just prior to merging. 3. About FTM: "I too wish I could merge without hunting the little points. I got in trouble by mergeing the lst time had to redo the whole program over. Just because of the differences that I didn't realize. Like Smith having 5 different ones with all the same name." Well, I did find out that all you have to do to force a merge is make sure that the name is exactly the same, this includes the case. Then the birthday must be the same, a year is enough. The program will then ask if the two individuals are the same, and will allow a merge...except when the two individuals have the same parent. In that case, you must detach one of the two people from the parents and then re-enter the birthdate of one of the people and then they will merge...sheesh! 4. About FTM: "I, too, have been very frustrated by not being able to merge known matches! It is amazing how many times I have gone to print out a copy of an outline descendancy chart and found duplicates of a number of people!" Yep, the program should allow merging from the descent outline because this is where a lot of duplicate are discovered. 5. general comment: "As long as you have to do it one, by one, you will avoid a lot of mistakes. A computer can be pretty dumb [even dumber than me] and a completely automatic merge can really mess things up." I agree that a completely automatic merge could mess things up. However, that is not what I am asking for. See my comments in #1. 6. FTM comment: "Rick, the newest version of FTM will do exactly what you want. There is a hitch, however; if you have more than two duplicates, FTM does nothing. I have a meta file that has lots of three, four, even five duplicates; it is a nightmare trying to keep relationships rationalized while deleting these." 7. Alternative suggestion: "I have enough problems with duplicating (& having to re-arrange)my own input without merging another whole set of info from someone else. What I just recently did ( I use FTM also)was down-loaded a GED COM into a family file of it's own. I have all of my initial info plus the info in a separate FTW from the GEC COM. That way I can 'compare' & take info that I lack from one & manually put it into the other. It works for me & is not as much work as merging the whole thing then trying to do away with all of the duplication." I don't mind if someone wants to do every thing by hand, but...we pay alot of money for software and it should work for us without making us worry about losing data. When doing it by hand is not as much work as doing it with a computer, then it just proves my point that the software is not doing its job. 8. FTM comment and suggestion: "This is one of the most frustrating things about this program. Sometimes just plain deleating one of the individuals seems to be about the only way to straighten the mess out. At time I have deliberately added some distingushing mark + % # signs etc to one of the people so that I could easilly tell them apart in the alpha list in order to be sure I am dealing with the one I want to get rid of or need to get changed in some way." 9. Good FTM info: "There is a mailing list for Family Tree Maker techinical questions, not maintained by Broderbund. If you're interested, the address to subscribe is ftmtech-l-request@lists.best.com. (That's an "L" not a "1") " 10. Comment: "I use FTM, and Reunion.. neither mergers worth a flip!" 11. Suggestion: "I take both my William Smith and change their names to William Smith12, make sure they have the same birth and death date or it won't work, then go back and take the 12 off the one name left. Works for me." 12. Programs that you guys recommended: a) Brothers Keeper: This program will merge GEDCOM files, but duplicate individuals must be merged by hand. b) Family Gathering: "I switched from FTM to Family Gathering last summer and merging GEDCOMs seemed to be pretty painless (or at least as painless as could be reasonably expected)." c) PAF: "Personal Ancestral File! Also called PAF. Auto match, manual merge so you can double check the data. It is easy and terrific!" "I went to the GENTEC Genealogy conference at Dallas, TX in Jan. The LDS was there and announced they were releasing a PAF 3.0 that would accomodate 1,000,000 persons in one file so that you could take all of your individual families and put them into one with notes. They were planing to release the program about Mar 15 1997 for about $20.00." "Rick, PAF will do what you want." "They said the new LDS program had a "smart" merge also. I have no experience yet" "PAF through the Mormon church for $35 is a good program, with it you can match & merge by names and not birth info you pick the one that is correct and merge the other date into it." "PAF on the Mac merges what it's told to merge and the only thing left over is double notes. Those need to be cleaned up." "I use PAF and find that it's merge module is easy to use and very effective. At any time in PAF you can get context-sensitive help. If you would like to try it go to a FHC and someone will even help you." "I use PAF 2.31 to match/merge the names from GEDCOM files. It will automatically match names but I have to decide if they are the same one. Then I hit a button and they are merged together and one is deleted. If they don't match according to me, I hit a button and the computer then finds the next match." d) Family Origins: "Family Origins allows merging of two GEDs, by importing the second file to the original. You can then merge individual files that you know are duplicates, and have it search for other possible duplicates." "Family Origins (Parsons Technology) has a "duplicate search" that will pop possible duplicates, and you can just hit "merge" at that point. You can set the perameters on the search to specify how close in age, etc, you want it to look. You can also do what I can only call a manual merge, in other words, pick out William Smith #1 and William Smith #2 and it will merge them on command." "I obtained Family Origins at a great price and loaded all my records via gedcom from FTW. Then I received a large gedcom from a new cousin. I reviewed it and determined I would merge the two. FTW was horrible. Family Origins did a pretty good job. I printed out a duplicate individual list, merged those (something else FTW will really mess up!) and was off and running." "Family Origins 5.0 will merge whomever you tell it to, right or wrong. It will warn you that one side (name) will put its data into the other, so you have to be careful which Bill Smith is on the left, which on the right. It's still a tricky business. Notes are what might suffer along with dates if you are not careful and read the help screen twice." "Family Origins for Windows version 5.0 does just that. (And, it's cheaper - $29.95.) " "Hi, by far Parsons' Family Origins 5.0 and above. FTM has problems with dates." "A similar if not worse problem occurs with the Parsons program. While upgrading from one version of the software to the newest available, I created a nightmare. First all of the duplicates had to be hand merged and once I had done this, I discovered all of the facts such as births, deaths, marriages and any notes I had added were duplicated on each file." "the Merge feature works very well. You can line up two individuals on a split screen & compare the facts before completing the merge. You can even reverse the order of the merge. After the merge is complete, you can "delete" any duplicate entries (i.e. two births or two deaths, etc.)." "Family Origins for Windows by Parsons Technology will let you do this. It is not hard at all and the program is abt $30." e) Family Reunion: "I see what you mean - getting rid of the duplicates. That does take awhile and Reunion is no different - duplicates must be removed manually." "I use Reunion on a MAC, and merging is a simple 1-2-3 action." f)(http://www.WhollyGenes.com) The Master Genealogist: "I use The Master Genealogist (TMG) and find that it's merge routines do all I want it to do. So for the safety of your data, TMG will merge only what you tell it to. IOW, it will merge two datasets; but that basically gives you a single dataset with two unconnected data groups. To merge those data groups, you must tell TMG to merge two persons. If the two original datasets were duplicated only by that person, you're essentially done, but normally a dataset merge will require that you merge a number of duplicate persons. The final step in TMG is to review the merged person for duplicate information for that person. " g) Ancestral Quest: "I currently use Ancestral Quest. Merging the two GEDCOM's is a snap, but Merging the individuals is very time consuming." h) Family Tree Maker: "I now have FTM 3.4, and it is not so picky about the individuals that it chooses to merge. It asked me if I wanted to merge my William FRENCHs, and their birthdays were generations apart." "I find I have that problem too with famtreemaker so I am now requesting outline descendant charts from people and I can choose what I want to put into my records...takes much less time and not so frustrating as going thru the merge process" "I Agree that is one of the most irritating features of Family Tree Maker." i) Win-Family IV: "I use Win-Family IV from JamoDat. They have a very simple merge system, sounds like what you are looking for. It brings the two individuals together in side-by-side windows so you can compare, with separate options for each window, and a merge button. After this is done you use the delete button to remove one of the persons. Try this You can download and try out a sample program with all functions except printing." j) Cumberland Family Tree: "Without a doubt the best program for this (and many, many other things) is Cumberland Family Tree for Windows. It's not owned by a large well-known company, but it runs circles around all the others." As many of you know, she was born in LCT, began researching her roots in 1957 and has published many volumes of LCT genealogy. She was the founding publisher of the genealogical journal "Lincoln County Tennessee Pioneers" which enjoyed its 25th anniversary in 1996. I promised her to put out the June issue of "Pioneers" and will try to continue beyond that. Visiting hours are in Fayetteville, Tuesday. Services are Wednesday about 10. Details may be obtained from Higgins Funeral Home, Fayetteville 615-433-2544. We would like to meet any of you who can attend. My mother was a religious woman and is now having a glorious reunion with all of her ancestors. The most elusive of which was her grandmother Nancy Jane Hunter, who also died on Easter Day (1916) and whose parentage was our greatest mystery. My mother had a wonderful Middle Tennessee wit. She sold jokes to Phyllis Diller and her humor was published in the Reader's Digest.
