Boling Vernell Courtner Cable Boling, 87, of Butler, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mrs. Boling was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late R.A. "Allen" and Mae Neatherly Courtner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas "Tom" Cable Jr.; her second husband, James E. Boling; a brother, Paul Courtner; a sister, Chloe Lipford; and a niece, Rita Stephens. Mrs. Boling was a retired school teacher, having taught in Carter and Johnson counties for 40 years. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy of Old Butler and East Tennessee State University with a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. She received her certificate for Headstart at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Mrs. Boling was a member of Butler Baptist Church where she taught the Intermediate Girls for many years and was also a leader of the Y.W.A. (Young Women's Association) for a number of years. She was active in the Women's Missionary Union of the church, having served as president, secretary and program chairman for over 20 years. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star in which she served as secretary for 17 years and also held other offices. Survivors include two sisters, Frances Courtner and Lucille Lowe Cardwell, both of Butler; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Mildred Courtner and Howard and Martha Courtner, all of Johnson City; two nieces and their husbands, Nioka and David Markland and Carolyn and Dr. James Wood; two nephews, Michael Lowe and Steve Courtner and his wife Carol; one great-niece, Stephanie Riley; two great-nephews, Rickie Berry and Joshua Berry; and one great-great- niece, Savannah Riley. Funeral services for Mrs. Boling will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Butler Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Koch and the Rev. Norman Reece officiating. Music will be provided by Anna Dugger, soloist, Jean Osborne, pianist, and Betty Cunningham, organist. Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star will conduct an Eastern Star Memorial Service following the funeral service at the church. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Ranshaw officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, will be Bob Finney, Larry Shoun, Vaughn Potter, Paul Campbell, Tom Kyte and Rick Bowling. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Honeycutt, Bob Johnson, Tom Barnes, James Johnson, Donnie Newell, Steve Courtner, David Griffey, Jake Walsh, Matt Snyderguard, George Shoun, Jesse Dillard, David Markland, David Johnson, Burkett Barnes and Johnny Pierce.
