Last Saturday night, John U Carter shot and instantly killed Charlie Smallwood, near Lynch's store, on flynn's Creek, this county. It appears that Carter has been missing his fence rails and suspected that some one had been stealing them. Late Saturday evening he took his Winchester rife and went out to look around his fences. He found Smallwood and Pete Viteto each with a load of rails. He ordered them to replace the rails on the fence, which they did. Hot words were passed, and Carter claims that Smallwood made a motion as if to draw a pistol, whereupon he shot in self defense. The ball pierced the heart of the unfortunate young man, killing him instantly. He was about 25 years old, and not regarded as a bad man. He leaves a wife and one child. Carter was arrained Sunday before Esq J R Spurlock. He waived examination and gave bond in the sum of $2,500 for his appearance at the March term of Circut Court. ************************************************* SENSATIONAL TRAGEDY. Monterey., Nov 30 - News has reached here aof a sensational tragedy which occurred near the Whittaker place, a few miles out from town, in which T A Whittaker, aged 30 years, was killed by his grandson C. Whittaker. It appears from what can be learned that they met in a road, 200 yards from the house when the young man assaulted his grandfather with a knife, cutting his throat. A attempt was made by Constable Alex Week to arrest young Whittaker, but he resisted and was shot and dangerously wounded by the officer. The community is wrought up over the crime and indignation is at a high pitch. ************************************************** THE I. O. O. F. SUPPER. The supper given by the I O O F Lodge, of Gainesboro, last Thursday night was decided success in every particular. Quite a crowd was in attendance and all enjoyed the bountiful supper spread for the occasion. W S McClain very ably entertained the crowd for a short time, in the lower room of the building, with an interesting and instructive paper on the history and progress of the Odd Fellows and the Daughters of Rebekah. >From there the crowd went to the Lodge room, where the tables were laden with good things to eat and spent a very pleasant time over their plates. There was plenty and to spare of turkey, oysters, ham, cake, fruits, candies, nuts and everything that one could desire or wish for. The Lege, and especially the ladies who assisted in preparing the supper, are to be complimented on its success. Good order was maintained and everything passed off very quietly.
