CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Mary Ann "Maw" Peters Simerly, 8 Oct 2003 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Mary Simerly Mary Ann "Maw" Peters Simerly, 103, died peacefully at Hermitage Health Center on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 surrounded by her family and caregivers. A native of Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Angie Markland Peters. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Will Simerly in 1979; three sons, James, Bobby, and Joe; a son-in-law, Brown Smith, and one grandson, Mike. She had lived most of her life in Carter County except for 13-15 years spent in the mining camps of West Virginia. Prior to moving to Hermitage Health Center, she had made her home with her daughter, Wilma, and her family, in the Hampton/ Rittertown Community. Mary Ann was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church, Hampton. She was the oldest resident at Hermitage Health Center, where she had made her home for the past two years. Her presence was seen and felt by all who entered there. Mary Ann was also the oldest participant in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life 2003. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Wilma and Bob Hill, and Elsie and Vaughn Fritts, of Hampton, and Helen Smith of Hermitage Health Center; four grandsons, Boyd Smith, of Chesapeake, Va.; Richard Smith, of Hampton; James Fritts, of Elizabethton, and Bobby Taylor, of Umatilla, Fla.; four granddaughters, Connie Potter, of Elizabethton; Margaret Hicks, of Hampton; Donna Teague, of Butler, and Reba Shreve, of Matthews, N.C.; one step granddaughter, Missy Brooks, of Hampton, and one step grandson, Jamie Hill, of Elizabethton; 15 great grandchildren, Danny Smith, of Elizabethton; Patrick Smith, of Virginia Beach, Va.; Brian Hicks, of Hampton; Jamie Lewis, of Johnson City; Courtney Smith, of Johnson City; Teresa Monroe, Billy Paul and Missy Taylor, of Chespeake, Va.; Eddie and Lucas Teague, of Butler; Robbie Fritts, of Hampton; Christopher and Whitney Shreve, of Matthews, N.C.; two step great grandchildren, Brady Hill, of Hampton and Madison Hill, of Elizabethton; eight great great grandchildren, Lucas Teague, Haley Smith, John Thomas "JT" and Lily Painter, Bryson Hicks, David Taylor, Tabitha Theirjung and Helen Monroe; one nephew, Clarence Willis, of Hampton; three nieces, Murl Darnell, of Oceana, W.Va.; Edna Setzer, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Margaret Pauley, of Prescott, Ariz. Funeral services for Mary Simerly will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2003 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the family's leadership and pastor Tommy Haynes assisting. Interment will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Richard Smith, Boyd Smith, James Fritts, Bobby Taylor, and great grandsons, Danny Smith, Patrick Smith, Brian Hicks, Robbie Fritts, Eddie Teague, Billy Paul Taylor and Kevin Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Willis, Glen Potter, Mack Hicks, Greg Shreve, Danny Teague, John Painter, Andy Lewis, Brian Monroe, the staff and caregivers of Hermitage Health Center, Mary Nell Colbert, Connie Tolley Robers, Karen Fisher and the many others who had the opportunity to share their life with Mary Ann "Maw" Simerly. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Bob Hill, 146 Arwood Hill Rd., Hampton.
