Phipps Brown H. Phipps, 86, of Watauga, died Saturday, August 19, 2006, at the VA Nursing Home. Mr. Phipps was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Jacob and Nona Blevins Phipps. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers. Mr. Phipps honorably served his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired electrician and enjoyed gardening. He was a longtime member of Watauga Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and faithfully gave of his time. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mildred Curd Phipps, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Richard Nave, Piney Flats; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brownie and Brenda Phipps, Watauga, and Jack and Brenda Phipps, Johnson City; a sister, Jessie Starnes, Johnson City; four granddaughters, Leslie Meredith and Sherri Montgomery, both of Elizabethton, Gayla Bolton, Johnson City, and Paula Shumpert, Fort Mill, S.C.; two grandsons, Jeff Nave, Piney Flats, and Kerry Phipps, Watauga; five great- grandchildren, Johnny and Wesley Bolton, Johnson City, Trey and Trent Shumpert, Fort Mill, S.C., and Makayla Phipps, Watauga; and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Phipps will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 21, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Elder Tommy Joe Andrews officiating. A committal service will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be his son-in-law, Richard Nave, his grandsons, Kerry Lee Phipps and Jeff Nave, and his grandsons-in-law, Bryan Montgomery, John Bolton and Derrill Shumpert Jr. His family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
