John L. Hathaway
 
John Lusk Hathaway, age 90, 301 Daytona Place, Elizabethton, died 
Friday afternoon while on his daily walk. He was a native of 
Elizabethton, and was the son of the late Major C.R. and Josie Lusk 
Hathaway. Mr. Hathaway was a 1931 graduate of Elizabethton High 
School and received his B.S. degree in the first Chemical Engineering 
Class of The University of Tennessee in 1935. After graduation from 
college, he began working in the Chemical Laboratory of Bemberg 
Fibers. He spent his entire working career with Bemberg and Beaunit 
Fibers. He was the Chemical Division Superintendent from 1942 to 
1954, the Production Manager and Plant Manager from 1954 till 1961, 
the Vice President of the Cupramonium Division of Beaunit Fibers 
from 1961 until 1966. He then became the Research Manager for Beaunit 
Fibers at Triangle Park, N.C., from 1966 until his retirement in 
1972. Following his retirement, he taught mathematics at the Herman 
Robinson Vocational School from 1973 until 1977. Mr. Hathaway was a 
lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton 
and was a member and president of the Wesley Sunday School Class. 
He was also a past president of the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club and 
was mentioned in the World Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He 
was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen Chambers 
Hathaway, May 5, 1996. He and Helen made sure their family stayed 
close by gathering everyone on holidays and by providing a cabin 
on Holden Beach every July for 25 years. 
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn Hathaway 
Brown and Ed Brown of Columbia, S.C., and Frances Hathaway Sams 
and Elmer Sams, Jr., of Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, 
John L. Hathaway D.D.S, and Nancy Luther Hathaway, of Johnson City; 
one sister, Florence Hathaway Williams, Bowmantown, Tenn.; one 
special niece, Ann Williams Large, Bowmantown, Tenn.; eight 
grandchildren, Tom Brown, Tampa, Fla., Jody Farris, Nashville, 
Tenn., Sean Brown, Columbia, S.C., Brad Sams, Rachelle Williams, 
and Chad Sams, all of Elizabethton, John Hathaway, III, Johnson City, 
and Travis Hathaway, Charleston, S.C. Nine great-grandchildren also 
survive. 
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2003, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, Elizabethton, with the Rev. Buford Hankins and the Rev. Brent Seals officiating. Music will be under the direction of Elmer Sams, Jr. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons, Tom Brown, Sean Brown, Brad Sams, Chad Sams, John Hathaway, III and Travis Hathaway. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Williams, Kevin Farris, members of the Wesley Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church, breakfast friends, friends and neighbors. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. on Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 3, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, Elizabethton, or friends may call at the residence, 301 Daytona Place, Elizabethton, any time. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations in memory of Mr. Hathaway to General Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 325 East E. Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643, or to American Cancer Society, 209 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
