CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Joe C. Birchfield, 18 Jun 2002 ----¤¤¤---- Joe C. Birchfield Joe C. Birchfield, 90, Blackbird Lane, Roan Mountain, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mr. Birchfield was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Nathan and Vasti Birchfield. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Mae McKinney Birchfield, and by three brothers and four sisters. Mr. Birchfield was the main fiddle player for the Roan Mountain Hill Toppers. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence and Rosie Birchfield and Lit and Sue Birchfield, all of Roan Mountain, Earl and Burma Birchfield and Bill and Janice Birchfield, all of Hampton; and a daughter, Beatrice Thompson, Elizabethton. Thirteen grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Birchfield, 90, Blackbird Lane, Roan Mountain, who died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, were conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Sugar Hollow Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Birchfield officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, June 21, at Gibbs Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from grandsons and friends. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Friday for the graveside service. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Sugar Hollow Free Will Baptist Church.
