Cephas Baird Santa Monica, Cal. March 23.-- Rev. Cephas Baird, for fifty years a minister of the English Lutheran church died early today at the home of his son from injuries sustained last January when a newspaper covering his face caught fire while he slept before an open fireplace. Rev. Mr. Baird was threatened with the lost of sight and his recovery was prevented by the fact that he had inhaled the flame of the burning paper. Rev. Mr. Baird was born near Akron, Ohio. in 1835, and had filled pastorates at Indianapolis, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mount Carrol, Ill., Anna, Ill., Nevada, Iowa, Dakota City, Neb., and other cities. The Los Angeles Times Tue Mar 24, 1908 Veteran Minister Dies Rev. Cephas Baird, for half a century a minister in the Lutheran Church, died at his home here this morning, as the result of burns sustained on the morning of January 26. At that time Mr. Baird, who was 75 years of age, laid down on the floor in front of a glowing grate. In order to shield his head from the flames he laid a newspaper over his face, and thus comfortably resting he soon dropped into a doze, to be awakened a little later by the blazing newspaper. Sparks flying from the hearth had set fire to paper, and the flames painfully burned the flesh of his face, his beard, hair and eyes. It is thought he inhaled the flames, and this probably caused his death. He was a hopeful and patient sufferer until ten days ago, when he was told that he might not regain his sight, upon recovery. This was a discouraging blow to him, and since that time he had expressed no desire to live and even refused nourishment. Mr. Baird was born near Zanesville, O. After his marriage he entered the Sealingagrove (Pa.) Theological Institute and in 1854 he was ordained. He organized and built twenty-six Lutheran churches in the middle western States. He leaves seven children. Those living in California ar C. S. Baird, manager of the Los Angeles Trustee Company, living at No. 1415 Second street, and Mrs. O. J. Valentine of Redlands. The funeral will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Kirkelles undertaking parlors at Main street and Pier avenue, Ocean Park.
